چکیده

Light experiences a non-uniformly moving medium as an effective gravitational field, endowed with an effective metric tensor g̃μν = η μν + (n2 − 1)uμuν , n being the refractive index and uμ the fourvelocity of the medium. Leonhardt and Piwnicki [Phys. Rev. A 60, 4301 (1999)] argued that a flowing dielectric fluid of this kind can be used to generate an ’optical black hole’. In the Leonhardt-Piwnicki model, only a vortex flow was considered. It was later pointed out by Visser [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 5252 (2000)] that in order to form a proper optical black hole containing an event horizon, it becomes necessary to add an inward radial velocity component to the vortex flow. In the present paper we undertake this task: we consider a full spiral flow, consisting of a vortex component plus a radially infalling component. Light propagates in such a dielectric medium in a way similar to that occurring around a rotating black hole. We calculate, and show graphically, the effective potential versus the radial distance from the vortex singularity, and show that the spiral flow can always capture light in both a positive, and a negative, inverse impact parameter interval. The existence of a genuine event horizon is found to depend on the strength of the radial flow, relative to the strength of the azimuthal flow. A limitation of our fluid model is that it is nondispersive. E-mail address: [email protected] E-mail address: [email protected]

Starburst-AGN Connection: A Lesson from High-z Powerful Radio Galaxies

Powerful radio galaxies at high redshift are highly useful in studies of early evolution of AGN-hosting galaxies because their observed optical and near infrared light are dominated by their stellar population rather than the nonthermal continuum emitted by the central engine of AGNs. In addition, the presence of AGN activity in them implies that a supermassive black hole has been already made ...

The Blandford-znajek Mechanism and Emission from Isolated Accreting Black Holes

In the presence of a magnetic field, rotational energy can be extracted from black holes via the Blandford-Znajek mechanism. We use self-similar advection dominated accretion (ADAF) models to estimate the efficiency of this mechanism for black holes accreting from geometrically thick disks, in the light of recent magnetohydrodynamic disk simulations, and show that the power from electromagnetic...

Infrared Time Lags for the Periodic Quasar Pg 1302 -

The optical light curve of the quasar PG 1302-102 at z = 0.278 shows a strong, smooth 5.2 yr periodic signal, detectable over a period of ∼ 20 yr. Although the interpretation of this phenomenon is still uncertain, the most plausible mechanisms involve a binary system of two supermassive black holes with a subparsec separation. At this close separation, the nuclear black holes in PG 1302-102 wil...
